As Diabetes Continues to Affect More People, Prediabetes
Prediabetes is becoming a more costly disease, as the cost of prediabetes has increased a whopping 74% over the last five years, says a new study published in the journal Diabetes Care.
About 86 million Americans have prediabetes, the condition that comes before a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. It’s largely symptomless, which is why so many people are unaware they have the condition until they are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
It’s estimated that diabetes costs the U.S. about $322 billion in medical costs and productivity loss, or about $1,000 for each American.
These results highlight the importance of better diabetes prevention and treatment, say diabetes experts.
